Short answer: in India, most small businesses pay roughly ₹10,000–₹75,000 a month for professional SEO. In Canada and the USA the common range is about $500–$3,000 a month. Very competitive markets, large eCommerce sites and multi-location businesses pay more. The price only means something once you know what work it buys, so this guide explains both.
We sell SEO ourselves, so we have tried to keep this practical: what each price level usually includes, what pushes the price up or down, the costs people forget, and how to judge whether a quote is fair. Market ranges below are typical figures quoted across the industry in 2026, not a rate card.
SEO Pricing Models
Agencies and consultants usually charge in one of four ways:
| Model | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | A fixed monthly fee for an agreed set of ongoing work | Most businesses. SEO is continuous work |
| Project fee | A one-off price for a defined job | Audits, migrations, new service pages, schema setup |
| Hourly consulting | Billed by the hour for advice or reviews | In-house teams that need expert direction |
| Performance-based | Paid per ranking or per lead | Rarely a good idea; see the warning below |
Performance-based SEO sounds safe, but it often rewards rankings for easy, low-value keywords that bring no customers. If you consider it, define the result as qualified leads or revenue that you can measure yourself.
Typical SEO Costs in India (2026)
| Level | Typical monthly range | What it usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| Basic local SEO | ₹10,000–₹20,000 | Google Business Profile, a handful of local keywords, on-page fixes, basic reporting. Little or no content. |
| Small-business growth | ₹20,000–₹50,000 | Technical fixes, keyword mapping, 2–4 pieces of content a month, local citations, Search Console reporting |
| Competitive or eCommerce | ₹50,000–₹1,50,000+ | Large-site technical SEO, category and product optimisation, regular content, real outreach for links |
A one-off technical audit in India is commonly priced from about ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 depending on site size and how detailed the fix list is.
Typical SEO Costs in Canada and the USA (2026)
| Level | Typical monthly range | What it usually covers |
|---|---|---|
| Local / single location | $500–$1,500 | Google Business Profile, citations, on-page SEO for core service pages, review process, monthly report |
| Competitive local or regional | $1,500–$3,000 | All of the above plus regular content, link outreach and conversion tracking |
| National, eCommerce or multi-location | $3,000–$10,000+ | Large technical programmes, content teams, digital PR |
Healthcare is a good example of how competition changes price: dental SEO in large Canadian and US cities is commonly quoted at $1,000–$2,500 a month because dozens of clinics are competing for the same searches. Our page on dental SEO services covers that niche in detail.
Many Canadian and US businesses work with agencies based in India. The work can be just as good, and the saving is real, as long as the agency writes for your market, understands your local search results and communicates well. Ask to see work done for clients in your country.
What Actually Drives the Price
1. How competitive your searches are
A clinic in a town with three competitors needs far less work than one in central Toronto, Mumbai or Los Angeles. Agencies estimate this by looking at who ranks now and how strong those sites are.
2. The size and condition of your website
A clean 15-page site can be fixed in days. A 3,000-URL store with duplicate products, broken redirects and slow templates needs weeks of technical work before content makes any difference.
3. How much content is missing
If your main services have no page of their own, those pages need to be written properly. Good content is one of the biggest real costs in SEO.
4. Your starting authority
New domains with no links or mentions need more authority-building, and real links take time and outreach.
5. Number of locations and languages
Each genuine location needs its own Google Business Profile, citations and local page. Each language needs its own content.
6. Who does the work
Experienced specialists cost more per hour than juniors following a template. Ask who will actually work on your account.
What You Should Get for Your Money
Whatever the price, a serious SEO engagement should include these. If a quote leaves them out, ask why.
- A written audit and plan before work starts, listing what will be fixed first and why. Our SEO audit checklist shows what a proper audit covers.
- Technical fixes made, not just reported: indexing, redirects, duplicates, speed and structured data.
- A keyword-to-page map so each important search has one clear page and your pages don’t compete with each other.
- Content work: improving existing pages and adding new ones where demand exists.
- Honest authority building: Google Business Profile, accurate citations and links from real organisations.
- Reporting from your own Search Console and Analytics: clicks, impressions, positions and leads.
- Access to everything: your accounts, your content, a change log you can check.
Costs People Forget to Budget For
- Website changes. If the site is very slow or built on a poor template, part of the SEO budget may need to go into fixing or rebuilding it. See our website cost guide.
- Content production if it isn’t in the retainer, especially photography or expert review for medical, legal or financial topics.
- Tools: most agencies include their own tools, but some charge them separately.
- Your own time: answering questions, approving pages and asking customers for reviews. SEO goes faster when someone on your side responds within a day or two.
Red Flags in Cheap SEO Packages
If a package costs far less than the ranges above, it usually means less work, often automated. Be careful with offers that include:
- “Guaranteed page-one rankings”. Nobody controls Google, and Google itself warns against anyone who guarantees a number-one ranking.
- A fixed number of backlinks a month (for example “50 high-DA backlinks”). Bought or bulk links break Google’s spam policies and can hurt you.
- Hundreds of directory submissions, which create messy, inconsistent listings you’ll later have to clean up.
- Reports with only “keywords in the top 100” and no clicks or leads.
- No access to your own accounts, or content and links that disappear when you stop paying.
- Location pages copied for dozens of cities with only the city name changed. Google treats these as doorway pages.

SEO vs Google Ads: Which Is Better Value?
They are priced differently and do different jobs:
| SEO | Google Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Monthly fee for the work | Every click, plus management |
| Speed | Months to build | Leads within days |
| When you stop paying | Rankings fade slowly | Leads stop immediately |
| Long-term cost per lead | Tends to fall as rankings grow | Tends to stay level or rise with competition |
Many businesses use ads for immediate enquiries while SEO builds. For ad budgets, see our Google Ads guide for small businesses.
How to Work Out Your Own SEO Budget
- Estimate what one new customer is worth to you over a year, not just the first sale.
- Look at the searches that matter. Free tools, or the Google Ads Keyword Planner, show roughly how many people search for your services in your area each month.
- Be realistic about clicks. Even good rankings capture only part of those searches, and only part of those visitors will enquire.
- Compare with what a lead costs you now from ads, referrals or directories.
- Commit for long enough to judge it: around six months, with clear monthly reporting.
Our keyword research guide walks through finding and sizing those searches.
How KhatooTech Prices SEO
We don’t sell fixed packages. We start with a free audit of your site and competitors, then propose a monthly scope with named deliverables (technical fixes, pages, authority work and reporting) and a price in your currency. Everything is agreed in writing before work starts, and you keep ownership of your accounts and content. We don’t guarantee rankings. See what’s included on our SEO, AEO & GEO services page, or for map-pack visibility, our local SEO service.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does SEO cost per month?
In India, small-business SEO retainers are commonly quoted from about ₹10,000–₹20,000 a month for basic local work, and ₹25,000–₹75,000 or more for competitive or eCommerce projects. In Canada and the USA, most small-business retainers fall roughly between $500 and $3,000 a month, with competitive markets and large sites costing more. Treat these as typical market ranges, not fixed prices.
Why do SEO prices vary so much between agencies?
Because the work behind the price varies. One package may be an automated report and a few directory listings, while another includes technical fixes, new content, link outreach and conversion tracking. Compare the deliverables and hours, not just the monthly fee.
Is cheap SEO worth it?
Usually not. Very low-cost packages tend to rely on automated audits, spun content or bulk directory submissions. These rarely move rankings and can leave inconsistent listings or low-quality links that later need cleaning up.
How long should I commit to SEO?
Plan for at least six months. The first one to three months usually go on fixes and foundations, and clicks typically start to follow from months four to six as pages move up. A short trial can show whether the agency communicates well, but not the full results.
Can I pay for SEO per project instead of monthly?
Yes, for defined jobs such as a technical audit, a site migration, or writing a set of service pages. Ongoing work such as content, authority building and monitoring is usually priced monthly because it never really finishes.
Does SEO cost include content writing and links?
It depends on the agency, which is why you should ask. Some retainers include a set number of pages or articles each month; others charge content separately. Be wary of anyone selling a fixed number of backlinks per month, since links bought in bulk break Google’s spam policies.
